This is how Willow and Tara's relationship in Buffy changed the world
We could talk about how the show pioneered genre television, how it empowered women and transformed silver screen entertainment into art. But as it began 20 years ago today, we have to talk about Willow Rosenberg. Spoilers for the show to follow. And while the sitcom Ellen may have seen both real life actress and character finally come out of the closet in — ratings decimated after this. But then you had a red-haired, bookish, quiet Willow supporting her superhero friend Buffy and while harboring a crush on wisecracking Xander. Interestingly enough, the leather-clad sadistic demon version was in a relationship with Vampire Xander — but was also very much interested in women. When you sleep with your boyfriend, and he turns bad, this was literally shown as Buffy had sex with the vampire hero Angel, he lost his soul, and he became evil and murderous.
Generally in these episodes, either two minor characters would be revealed as lesbians and never appear again, or a seemingly straight woman would kiss another woman and it would never be addressed again. The trope was widely used both for comic relief and as something to advertise for a ratings boost. Their first on-screen kiss happened mid way through Season Five, by which point the two characters had been together for an entire season. Whedon responded by threatening to leave the show if they refused to allow the kiss. Tara rushes in and comforts her, and for the first time on screen, they kiss.
In the golden age of television, there are more shows than any person could possibly keep up with. Since , Buffy has stolen the imaginations of viewers, many of who have found the show as young adults. In the series, a teenage girl named Buffy Summers moves to Sunnydale from LA after she burns her school gymnasium to the ground. It was all to stop a bunch of hungry, homicidal vampires, but whatever. Once in Sunnydale, Buffy meets Rupert Giles, her Watcher and the school librarian, who will train her on how to fight vampires and contain the Hellmouth that, what do you know, just so happens to be located directly under Sunnydale High.
